We’re big fans of music here at Spirit of Yorkshire, as well as at our sister brewery The Wold Top Brewery. So in lieu of the regular live music at the distillery and brewery (and to give us a really nice way of feeling connected, even though we’re all apart), we’ve compiled a joint playlist of the team’s favourite songs for enjoying a glass (or more…) of something delicious to. Each team member from both Wold Top and SOY has been asked to submit a few songs that they love... Read More
A different kind of Easter this year. We toasted the weekend with a glass of our Maturing Malt Distillery Projects 002, which we released in Spring 2018 and which has notes of honeycomb and hot cross buns. Needless to say, that called for a baked accompaniment and despite the shortages of flour and yeast, our local suppliers had the right things in stock! We used both a recipe and flour from Side Oven, a farm-based bakery from nearby Driffield. Our eggs came from Trotters Farm Shop on the edge of... Read More
The train timetables have been updated for 2020 so here are the revised ‘best trains’ to take from Scarborough and Bridlington if you’re visiting us for a tour. From Hunmanby station, go left as you leave the platform (on either side) and walk up the hill. The distillery is on your left after about 5 minutes walk. Don’t forget – if you show a valid ticket when you come for your distillery tour, we’ll give you a free hot or cold drink and a biscuit. Or if there are four... Read More
Last week we sold out the coffee shop for an evening celebrating the poetic works (and love of whisky) of Robert Burns, arguably Scotland’s most famous poet. Libby, Joe, Claire and the team put on a brilliant show of cask samples, poetry and giant Yorkshire puddings (which Claire had been making them for weeks in advance!) alongside the expected haggis, neeps and tatties. Next up we have Valentine’s Day with a difference – an evening pairing whisky and chocolate (from Bullion in Sheffield). We can’t wait!
We’re often being asked by those a bit further afield about where you can buy Filey Bay around the country. Our ‘stockists’ list is now live on the website! Just head here to see where you can get your Filey Bay bottles / drams if you’re not local to the Yorkshire Coast and would rather have the bottle there and then, rather than buying online.
We have all sorts of interesting and exciting things in plan for this year, from single malt releases to new clothing in the distillery shop, to great music lined up for our monthly Distillery Sessions. To stay on board with us and hear about what’s happening at the distillery first, please sign up to our newsletter: http://bit.ly/2HriUOD.
We had a brilliant time at our Open Day on the 10th August. We loved seeing you all and showing you round the distillery. The Masterclasses worked really well (That coffee! That fish! That chocolate!) and it was great to see how much enthusiasm and positivity there is about what we’re doing here in Hunmanby. See you again next year!
Last Friday, the distillery turned into a hotbed of knowledge as teams competed to win the Spirit of Yorkshire quiz night. Chrissie’s questions brilliantly combined the high and the low, testing everyone’s knowledge of whisky, history, Disney and ketchup (!), with a lot of laughs and a very close scoreline at the end. We’ll be planning our next one for the autumn so keep an eye out for dates and begin assembling your best and brightest team…
At the beginning of May, we had a blog post matching Hunmanby train services with the times of our tours; the timetable’s since changed so here’s the update. There are so many reasons why it’s a good idea to take the train to the distillery to come see us – it means everyone can try the drams after the tour with no need for a designated driver; it’s nice to not have to drive and worry about sitting in traffic in and out of Scarborough (we’ve all been stuck on Filey... It’s not often you get the world’s best cyclists coming through the village, so to celebrate the Tour de Yorkshire Women’s and Men’s races flying through Hunmanby, we hosted a pairing evening on the Friday evening before. 6 drams were paired with 6 types of produce, all from along the route of the tour and all from producers for whom provenance is of the utmost importance. 45 people packed out the Pot Still Coffee Shop and the team here at Spirit of Yorkshire each took a turn to introduce the...
