Single Grain Whisky - Ireland
Upon it’s completion in 2015 the Teeling distillery became the first to open in Dublin in over 125 years. Ahead of its completion the Teeling family began releasing a range of whiskies utilising mature stock from their previous distillery Cooley, in County Lough. Single grain whiskies aren’t that common and single grain Irish whiskies are next to none existent when compared to their single malt counterparts. The term ‘single grain’ refers to a style of whisky made using different grains and distilled using column stills as opposed to malt whisky which is made using only malted barley and nearly always distilled using pot stills. The ‘single’ in both cases referring to whisky from a ‘single’ distillery. Grain whisky emerged during the mid-late 1800s and has historically been used to make up the lion’s share of blended whiskies. In this case Teeling have matured this light mellow spirit style in Californian Cabernet Sauvignon wine casks. The result has created quite a storm and certainly helped prove, that when grain whisky is treated with a bit of love and affection it can be anything but ordinary.
Tasting note; Soft, fruity and elegant with dried red fruit notes throughout accompanied with gentle ripples of vanilla and sweet oaky spice.
