Regenerative Principle Two
Keep the Soil Surface Covered
After harvest (because nearly all distilling approved barley varieties are spring planted varieties) we direct drill cover crops into the fields which include nitrogen fixing and carbon absorbing plants such as phacelia, radishes and black oats. This crop grows throughout the winter and is then killed off by frost in late winter; the spring barley is direct drilled over the top of it.
“The impact of rain drops or burning rays of sun or frost can all harm the soil. A duvet of growing crops, or stubble residues, will protect it.”
