Breaking our series of Finishes posts, to bring you Filey Bay Yorkshire Day 2022, as Joe and Jenni have been at the House of Lords for a “Yorkshire Reception,” celebrating innovation, enterprise and culture in the county.

For our Filey Bay Peated Finishes, we've brought the west coast of Scotland to the east coast of England to 'finish' our whisky in ex-peated casks from Islay.

During maturation, our light and fruity style weaves into the creamy, subtly smoked wood of the casks, creating delicious coastal whiskies that hold flavours of vanilla and caramel.

Batch #2 won a coveted World Whisky Master in 2022 and sold through very quickly. Batch #3 is in cask maturing as we speak and will be in bottles later this year.

Further to last night's post, we're staying with the 'finished' theme.

Filey Bay STR Finish is a visually striking whisky because of the deep colour it draws from the STR (Shaved, Toasted, Recharred) ex-red wine casks.

It tastes as good as it looks too. Light, floral and fruity with flavours of red fruits, vanilla ice cream and toasted oak.

The finishing process is intensive and time-consuming but well worth the effort as it adds layers of flavour and complexity to our light, sweet and fruity ex-bourbon house style.

Multi award-winning Filey Bay Moscatel Finish was initially matured in 200L bourbon casks filled in 2016 before being transferred to 250L Hogshead barrels from Spain that had contained Moscatel floral and aromatic naturally sweet sherry wine for 10 years before this.

It's soft, sweet and fruity with notes of orange, honey, dried fruits and cocoa, and we love it!

It’s Mother’s Day on Sunday (19th). In this part of Yorkshire we can recommend a number of brilliant independent florists and growers. We’ll hazard a guess that wherever you are, there’ll be some great places near you too.

For flower arrangements, @LisasFloristSelby and @FlowerMerchant also stock our whisky in store, making them brilliant one-stop-shops in Selby and Market Weighton respectively! The wonderful Helen (@flowers.rosebud) is responsible for the flowers around the distillery, most of which are grown by her. Flowers by Jenny (@flowersbyjennybrid) is a favourite of the team too.

For pots and bulbs, try your local nursery – Reighton Nurseries is literally two minutes up the road from the distillery, or Eastfield Garden Centre (@eastfieldgardencentre), Moss and Moor (@MossandMoor) and Tong Garden Centre (@tong_garden_centre) are long time stockists of Filey Bay as well.

Lastly, if you’re looking for local growers, @FlowersfromtheFarm has a brilliant local search tool on their website too.

“Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking!”

But that’s because it works! Mother’s Day, the first day of Spring, and beautifully bright spring bulbs really do go brilliantly together, especially when accompanied by a bottle of light and fruity Filey Bay Flagship…

We love flowers here at the distillery, brewery and on the farm – something we hope you’ve noticed if you’ve been for lunch or a tour, or just bobbed in to pick something up.

Our late Director Gill was a horticulturist and created an incredible garden from nothing at Hunmanby Grange (the farm), as well as designing many gardens locally too. She brought a love of all things floral and botanic to Kate and me (her two daughters) and so I wanted to come out behind the ‘fourth wall’ of social media today to talk about flowers and Mother’s Day.

Nothing makes me happier than someone telling me they have a-this or a-that plant on her recommendation, and that they think of her whenever they look at it. She was my personal plant wiki – I’d send a picture to her of a plant and immediately get a response back with its common name, latin name and an interesting fact too.

Mum and Rebecca (Thompson, also a Director) together devised and planted the beautiful landscaping at the distillery too, with year round colour and interest, which was always so important to her when it came to garden design. They had great fun one summer planting the Filey Bay and Spirit of Yorkshire Dahlias in old casks by the main door, named and bred just for us by customer Bob Hendley.

Mum was passionate about supporting local industries, especially those doing things from scratch. So for this coming Mother’s Day, if you’re looking to send some blooms (alongside your bottle of Filey Bay or Cream Liqueur of course!) then please do look and think local first.

Over the next week or so we’ll be doing some posts highlighting some great Yorkshire (and further afield) florists, nurseries and garden centres, where you can get something to dazzle the mum-figure in your life, as well as often picking up a bottle of Filey Bay.

And if it’s a difficult day for you, know that we’ll be raising a dram with you too.

Not long now until we'll be drilling our Spring Barley. The amount of barley we plant each year changes depending on field rotations; for 2023 we'll be growing just over 100 hectares (10 points if you can convert that to acres in your head!) all planted with a direct drill. Later in March we'll be doing a series of blog and social posts about how we're farming – covering everything from rotations to soil structure and why that's important for great tasting whisky & beer. Because that's what we're growing this barley for!
