Newspaper clipping from the 1990s which discusses Tom and Gill Mellor winning planning permission for wind turbines at Hunmanby Grange, the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery Farm. 06/09/2020

Growing: Wind Power

We’ve talked before about our direct drilling trial which we’re aiming to harvest this weekend but that’s not the only way that we work with natural resources to sustainably make our Filey Bay single malt whisky and the beer at Wold Top Brewery. Co-founder Tom’s long been an advocate of wind power and pushing for sustainable farming methods. That’s the thing about being up on a hill just in-land from the north sea… it’s a fairly rare day when it’s not blowing! He first applied for, and won, planning permission... Read More

Presenting Filey Bay First Release Bottle No. 1 from the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery 13/01/2020

Distilling: Bottle No. 1

Bottle No. 1 from any distillery is always very special. Some distilleries auction them off, some keep hold of them, some are probably much too old to remember their first bottle!  We decided to run a competition for ours. Purchasing a limited edition and entering the special code within entered you into the draw to win the first ever bottle from Yorkshire’s first ever distillery. We had hundreds of entries and in mid-November we drew the winning name using a random number generator.  The winner was John, from a village... Read More

Growing: Three Years

It’s been 3 years since our stills were first fired in May 2016 and the very first casks of Yorkshire whisky were laid down. Since then our 2016 casks have been patiently waiting in our warehouse, each day edging closer to becoming whisky. In celebration of our first distillations reaching the crucial whisky milestone of 3 years, for this month’s ‘focus on’ we’re looking back, with a touch of nostalgia (forgive us), at the last few years and discussing the maturation requirement: why it’s relevant and why we’re choosing to... Planting barley at Hunmanby Grange 09/04/2019

Growing: Barley

Over the next few months on our blog we’ll be focusing on key production areas at our distillery. First up: Barley. We’re in a pretty unique position as whisky distilleries go, ‘field-to-bottle’ production in the whisky industry is a real rarity. Field-to-bottle to us means that every drop of spirit that runs from our stills can be traced back to the fields on our farm so naturally, as you might expect, we take barley seriously. This unique perspective allows us to look at barley with three hats on so to... Read More

Enjoying: Spirit of Yorkshire goes to Westminster

Maturing Malt Hits the Road. On the 18th of December, our 004 Maturing Malt went on a trip with our Whisky Director to Westminster. The day was hosted at The House of Commons by Welcome to Yorkshire, showcasing some of best food and drink within God’s own county at a Taste of Yorkshire event. We had a great day talking to a few of our MP’s, they couldn’t believe that our 004 is only a two year old spirit. Needless to say our latest release was a hit with both... Read More
