Earth Day #2 08/06/2022

Growing: Earth Day #2

The sustainability of our farm is extremely important to us and underpins everything we do. For this piece in our Earth Day series, we’ll be looking at how and why we use cover crops as part of our annual rotation. Co-Founders David Thompson, an expert in crop science and Tom Mellor, a farmer, are always improving their understanding of crops and evolving their thinking about how we farm the land and what is grown. Since 1945, when the Mellor family bought Hunmanby Grange, the farm has been primarily arable with... Read More

Growing: Earth Day 2022

In celebration of Earth Day this year, over the next couple of weeks we’re going to be doing a number of pieces about what we’re doing to help the Earth here at Spirit of Yorkshire. We’ll be stripping our field to bottle process right back, expanding every step with substantial detail. Starting at the very beginning, this piece is an insight into the history of our farm. For us, at the home of Filey Bay Yorkshire single malt whisky, it’s about doing things properly. That’s why we’re obsessed with every... Read More

A classic example of its style or variety.’ ‘The IWSC is judged by 85 experienced sommeliers, distillers, vintners and distributors. Filey Bay IPA Finish 12/01/2022

Distilling: Filey Bay IPA Finish

We love whisky and beer, which should come as no surprise to anyone reading this. We always get excited about a new release, but this one, in particular, is something really very special and completely unique. A release that takes our field to bottle whisky another step forward and flavours wise takes our whisky in a really exciting and different direction. Following the release of Yorkshire’s first single malt whisky in 2019, there hasn’t been a bottling as highly anticipated by the distillery team as this release. “Single malt whisky... Read More

Living: 2021 Whisky Festivals, Joe’s Version

Having over 18 months off from shows and events since we launched our whisky in late 2019, was very strange, to say the least. Being back out really has been great, on every level, not just for the brand we have built, but the customers we have finally had a chance to meet and our team too. One of the best parts of being back out there in whisky shows has been seeing our fans in the flesh. Despite being replicated ‘virtually’ throughout 2020, hearing the comments and watching the... Living: 2021 Whisky Festivals, Amy’s Version

Working in a small and independent Distillery you get to experience all aspects of making whisky. Some fun, like smelling the casks before they’ve been filled with new make spirit, some a little less so. But the part of working at the Spirit Of Yorkshire Distillery I enjoy the most is getting out and sharing our whisky and our story. Flavour and drinks are things I have always been interested in, so when the opportunity to work in a distillery came up, I knew I wanted to be part of... Read More

STR Finish Batch #2 08/12/2021

Distilling: Filey Bay STR Finish Batch #2

Since its launch in July 2020, Filey Bay STR Finish has become a big favourite of the team and customers alike. Scooping up a medal or two at competitions, which is always great to see. However, the best recognition for any whisky, we believe is repeated purchases. There really is no better testament to what you’re making when someone finishes a bottle and wants to buy it again. Something we have seen a lot with this release. As with the original batch, a primary maturation in bourbon casks has softened... Read More
