Living: Women in Whisky – Amy Teasdale

Our Brand Ambassador Amy, recently took part in a Q&A with the organisers of the Seven Hills Whisky Festival with a focus on Women in Whisky

Here’s how she got on…

Tell us a bit about your background and how you got into the whisky industry?

“I’ve always been interested in flavour, even before discovering coffee, wine, beer, and whisky! I started out behind bars and wine bars, then moved into coffee. I realised these drinks are connected by flavour profiles. I began my whisky career in the coffee shop at Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery. After tough in-house training, I became a tour guide in 2017.”

What inspired you to pursue a career in whisky?

“I’ve always loved whisky, emotionally connected through my grandad. I never thought it could be a career in Yorkshire until my team encouraged me. Now, 5 years later, I’m proud to represent Yorkshire’s first single malt whisky across the UK and Europe.”

What does your current role involve, and what do you enjoy most about it?

“I support our trade customers, educating the world about our unique whisky. This involves lots of travel. At the distillery, I help in the warehouse, fill casks, clean the stills, and sometimes work on the bottling line. I love the variety and learning something new every day.”

Can you share some memorable moments or milestones in your whisky journey?

“One favourite memory is my first Whisky Show London. I was starstruck by the recognisable faces and delicious whisky. A milestone was my first European whisky show in The Netherlands. It was a big moment for me, realising I wanted to be with people who love the whisky world as much as I do.”

What’s your favourite whisky and why?

It depends on the mood and company. I love our IPA finish for its light, refreshing taste. Outside Filey Bay, I’m a sucker for Islay whisky, especially Caol-ila, which brings back great memories with friends.”

What advice would you give to someone looking to start their journey in the whisky world?

“Try as much whisky as possible from around the world and enjoy it! It’s all about learning and experiences with like-minded people. Attend whisky shows and tastings.”
