Enjoying: The Tour de Yorkshire at the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery

The Tour de Yorkshire will pass through Hunmanby on stage 3 (4th May), as it takes a very circuitous route from Bridlington to Scarborough (definitely not just going straight along the A165!) We’re big fans of cycling here at the Spirit of Yorkshire and we’re thrilled that Hunmanby features on the course again – it’s not often you get world class cyclists flying through the village – and so we’ve got a few things planned in honour of the event…  Key times: the women will pass through the village at around 9am, with... Living: Favourite Yorkshire Places

Hunmanby Gap – only a couple of miles from the Distillery, it’s part of Filey Bay and we all love it. For clearing our heads, walking the dogs or tiring out kids, you’ll usually find one of us there, rain or shine.

Enjoying: Blind Tasting World Whisky

As discussed by David in The Spirits Business at the end of last year, we consider the category of ‘World Whisky’ to be more important than specific country names. In celebration of this, last week we hosted a World Whisky Tasting at the Distillery, with a selection of drams from around the world, curated by our Whisky Director, Joe. The Distillery was packed and guests were given six whiskies to blind taste and discuss. But there was a twist… one of the six was a Spirit of Yorkshire Oloroso Cask,... Read More

Distilling: our thoughts on English Whisky regulations

In the print edition of Spirits Business from November 2018 and online now, our director David (along with Dan from the Cotswold Distillery, Andy from the East London Liquor Company, and Paul from The Lakes Distillery) was asked for his thoughts on the English whisky market and what the impact of imposing regulations for English whisky could be. His take on things? Regulation is necessary to ensure quality but there’s a balance; rules shouldn’t impact on innovation. And everyone agreed that it’s not just about English whisky as a category... Enjoying: Spirit of Yorkshire goes to Westminster

Maturing Malt Hits the Road. On the 18th of December, our 004 Maturing Malt went on a trip with our Whisky Director to Westminster. The day was hosted at The House of Commons by Welcome to Yorkshire, showcasing some of best food and drink within God’s own county at a Taste of Yorkshire event. We had a great day talking to a few of our MP’s, they couldn’t believe that our 004 is only a two year old spirit. Needless to say our latest release was a hit with both... Read More

Enjoying: The Rugby League International Federation with Welcome to Yorkshire

Last week we were invited by Welcome to Yorkshire, to join them at an event welcoming the Rugby League International Federation to Yorkshire and York. Joe met a delegation of VIPs from the world of Rugby League, and members of the Welcome to Yorkshire team with Distillery Projects 003 and a selection of Wold Top Beers at the beautiful Mansion House in York. According to Joe – “the Samoans really took to our Maturing Malt and Against the Grain went down very well with everyone!”

Distilling: Distillery Projects 004

The fourth Maturing Malt in our “Distillery Projects” range is now available for general presale (collection will be around the end of November). Our Distillery Projects range is all about exploring what our spirit can be. For the moment, as we wait (a little impatiently!) for our Single Malt to mature in casks for the required amount of time for both regulations and optimum taste, the DP releases have all been Maturing Malts. However, in the future, this won’t be the case… What is Distillery Projects 004 and why is... Read More

Enjoying: Distillery Session – “Raven”

On Friday night (26th October) we welcomed Raven to the Distillery for a magical night of music. With a diverse and spirited sound, they wove a magical blend of music, stories and melodies, and the audience were suitably entranced… it was a great atmosphere, with a full-house and lots of Wold Top and wine flowing! With each monthly Distillery Session we like to showcase local musicians who have unique sounds and bring their own ‘spirit’ (sorry!) to their performances. Our next session is on the 30th November and will be... Read More

Living: BBC Radio Humberside at Spirit of Yorkshire

Sally Fairfax from BBC Radio Humberside came to visit us yesterday (24th October) – Joe gave her a tour of the Distillery, discussing our ethos, why we’ve done what we’ve done, and our aims and ambitions. The interview is available for the next couple of weeks so if you’d like to listen, then please click here (from around 40 minutes in)

Enjoying: Alastair James Music Nights

We’re big fans of local artist Alastair James here at the distillery, with his soulful voice and range of styles, whether he’s playing as part of a bigger band or doing a solo session. After a small break over the summer, he was back playing to a crowd in the Pot Still Coffee Shop on Friday night (12th October). As ever, we all thought he was brilliant and are looking forward to his next music night on Friday 9th November. To stay informed about all our music nights, Distillery Sessions... Read More
